Summary

The second book in The Dandelion Dynasty, the epic fantasy trilogy by Ken Liu。

Dara is united under the Emperor Ragin, once known as Kuni Garu, the bandit king。 There has been peace for six years, but the Dandelion Throne rests on bloody foundations – Kuni's betrayal of his friend, Mata Zyndu, the Hegemon。 The Hegemon's rule was brutal and unbending – but he died well, creating a legend that haunts the new emperor, no matter what good he strives to do。

Where war once forged unbreakable bonds between Kuni's inner circle, peace now gnaws at their loyalties。 Where ancient wisdoms once held sway, a brilliant scholar promises a philosophical revolution。 And from the far north, over the horizon, comes a terrible new threat。。。 The scent of blood is in the water。

With this second book, this series is establishing itself as my second favorite fantasy series, behind only A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones)。 It's to be seen whether it can maintain that distinction over all four books。 I don't know how many others would be able to say the same though。 Should you read this? You may as well try。The author has labeled this series as "silkpunk", though I'd also call it science fantasy, with a particular focus how science works in this fantasy world。 As with With this second book, this series is establishing itself as my second favorite fantasy series, behind only A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones)。 It's to be seen whether it can maintain that distinction over all four books。 I don't know how many others would be able to say the same though。 Should you read this? You may as well try。The author has labeled this series as "silkpunk", though I'd also call it science fantasy, with a particular focus how science works in this fantasy world。 As with the first book, various technologies are developed and described in detail。 This may be off-putting for general fantasy readers。 I found their usage ingenious and uncommon which led to a rather unconventional form of warfare。The first third of the novel is relatively peaceful and filled with philosophical musings of all sorts。 It examines society, the people, and their institutions in detail。 I found it surprisingly relatable to modern concerns。 Many of the ideas found in the author's short fiction are represented here。 I found it particularly interesting how the gods in this setting respond to worship。 They're who they're believed to be and are geographically bound。 I wouldn't have minded if the entire novel had continued as such。The latter half of the novel is war。 The war differs rather a lot from how it was conducted it in the first book, as this time it's a foreign invasion。 Much time is spent trying to understand the other side as well。 A significant portion is the actual warfare itself。 No one is safe。 Anyone can die。 A character notes that any piece can be sacrificed if doing so will bring about victory。 The rest of the series seems that it will continue from the idea of the invasion, which isn't what I would prefer, but will still probably be immensely enjoyable。The book has its problems as well, though they weren't enough to detract from my overall enjoyment in any meaningful way。 At times the plot, especially near the end, relies too much on coincidence to set up narrative tension for future plot lines。 It was also questionable that the climatic action at the end is interspersed with flashbacks of how a specific technology was developed。 There are various other concerns, but again, nothing that mattered much to my personal enjoyment。I had put off reading this until it was much closer to the release of the third book, so that there would be less chance of me forgetting much。 Whenever I experience something so emotionally powerful, it takes me a while to recover, so I have to account for that as well。 Maybe waiting until all the books were released would be better, but that's not something I'm capable of doing when I've enjoyed myself so much。 。。。more

Stopped at 71%。An improvement on the first book, especially with the characters。 Fewer introduced in this one and you stay with them longer。 Jia's character definitely took on a conniving turn but enjoyed Zomi the best。 More beasts were introduced and natives of other lands, leading to more war and instability Once it got into Luan's story, I lost interest。 I can't stomach torture scenes so stopped at 71%。 Stopped at 71%。An improvement on the first book, especially with the characters。 Fewer introduced in this one and you stay with them longer。 Jia's character definitely took on a conniving turn but enjoyed Zomi the best。 More beasts were introduced and natives of other lands, leading to more war and instability Once it got into Luan's story, I lost interest。 I can't stomach torture scenes so stopped at 71%。 。。。more

I'd have been very annoyed if that was spoiled。 Anyway, this book was crazy good。 Jia is so evil and I can't believe she's the same woman as in book 1。。。。 so scary。 Poor Risanna。。。Loved all the characters, lots of badasses。 Traitors are the worst。 WOWI loved this。 So intense, so crazy。 I'm really glad I didn't read the plot summary on goodreads before reading the book。 It spoils the whole invasion, which doesn't even happen until like half way through! A remarkable epic。 Complex flawed characters, masterful worldbuilding, compelling story, engrossing moral and political dilemmas。 Just when you think Ken Liu has pulled the last rabbit out of his hat, he produces another rabbit。 The thinking persons fantasy。

The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu is a the second epic scale tale of the Empire of the Seven Islands of Dara。 Like the first book in the series, it is filled with conflict, cutting edge renaissance-punk technology, invasions, explorations, and this time most of all intrigue in the imperial court。 As with the first novel in the series, the invented language, culture, etc feels like a very real highly advanced ancient Asian empire。 And like the first book, the story weaves a complex tapestry with many The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu is a the second epic scale tale of the Empire of the Seven Islands of Dara。 Like the first book in the series, it is filled with conflict, cutting edge renaissance-punk technology, invasions, explorations, and this time most of all intrigue in the imperial court。 As with the first novel in the series, the invented language, culture, etc feels like a very real highly advanced ancient Asian empire。 And like the first book, the story weaves a complex tapestry with many key characters, and is fairly hard to put down once you get into it。 This book was also fun to read, and I look forward to reading the third book in the series。 。。。more

4。5 StarsThis is an improvement to the already great story of the Dandelion Dynasty。 Silkpunk is a beautiful and complex era。 Brutal and inventive。I love Kuni Garu from the first novel, but Zomi Kidosu is my favorite in this novel。 Her and Luan Zya were my favorite parts。 Their adventures and experiences together were wonderful。 The stories and teaching that he imparted to her。。。were incredible。Like the Song of Ice and Fire, Ken Liu is NOT afraid of making BOLD choices and killing characters。I d 4。5 StarsThis is an improvement to the already great story of the Dandelion Dynasty。 Silkpunk is a beautiful and complex era。 Brutal and inventive。I love Kuni Garu from the first novel, but Zomi Kidosu is my favorite in this novel。 Her and Luan Zya were my favorite parts。 Their adventures and experiences together were wonderful。 The stories and teaching that he imparted to her。。。were incredible。Like the Song of Ice and Fire, Ken Liu is NOT afraid of making BOLD choices and killing characters。I do NOT like Jia。 Oh, man。。。she's ruthless。 She makes Queen Cersi of GoT look like a debutant。 Ugh。 I do like Risana, though I fear she would not be strong enough to survive being around her Big Sister。Oh, and Gin Mazota。 Such a powerful presence。 She fought hard to be her own individual。 I really like her character。The political intrigue in this novel it amazing。 I am with Zomi。。。I don't have flair for it (nor like it), but just want to survive the turmoil。The people from beyond The Wall of Storms were terribly coniving。 Ugh。 Being friendly was deemed a weakness, but then again。。。the early representatives were arrogant and wretched creatures in their own way。I cannot wait to see what the next entry in this series is going to bring us。Where will these characters take us? Will Dara be the main focus? or will the lands on the other side of The Wall of Storms? Interesting to think about。Also, the use of flashbacks and poetry in this book was leveled up。 Ken shows you what has happened in the present, then tells you why it happened by referencing how they got there through flashbacks。 I usually don't like that, but he does it with such a flair。。。that it works for this story VERY well。Also, the use of poetry is beautiful and clever。 I usually am not a fan of reading poetry, but through the lense of the protagonist (usually Zomi) we get to see behind the curtain to why the poem is an efficient wayt to support the story at hand。 Lastly, I want to say。。。it was hard to lose so many great characters within this book。 It is a battlefield of emotions。 Sadness, but heroism to the core。I, too, want the best for the Land of Dara。。。but I will read in a way that isn't as abusive as Jia。 More like the inquisitive mind and rebel of Zomi and her drive to fight the Power (changing the ways that the Dara people find truly brilliant people to lead them into the next age)。 。。。more

This book covers a lot of history。 Some sections do drag, but other parts of the book are sufficiently action-packed, preventing complete boredom。 I loved the development of all the new characters (Théra and Zomi especially), as well as seeing how the older generation (Jia, Gin, Risana, etc。) navigated the new challenges。 Excited for book 3!

Heartbreaking。 It would be simple to compare this to game of thrones which has pulled off similar swaths of death。 But I cared more deeply for these people。 I can’t wait for the third book。 I’m pre ordering it now and will devour it as soon as it’s released。 。。。more

4/10“It is the duty of fathers to fight wars, so their children may live in peace。”And it was my duty to read this so that you don't have to。 I was hoping for Liu to build well on the foundation he laid in Grace in Kings; unfortunately, this was a step back in most regards。 There were multiple reasons for this, from the most interesting character taking a back seat to a plot that couldn't decide its direction, but the main reason is the lack of meaning。 In the previous book we had a conflict bet 4/10“It is the duty of fathers to fight wars, so their children may live in peace。”And it was my duty to read this so that you don't have to。 I was hoping for Liu to build well on the foundation he laid in Grace in Kings; unfortunately, this was a step back in most regards。 There were multiple reasons for this, from the most interesting character taking a back seat to a plot that couldn't decide its direction, but the main reason is the lack of meaning。 In the previous book we had a conflict between two good men both striving against each other to create a better world, in this book we have some angry vikings。 The whole thing was a bit of a disappointment。 Moreover, every time a character encounters difficulty, Liu uses deus ex machina to simply make the problem go away。 Multiple discovery that should take generations happen in a few months so that the 'good guys' have a fighting chance。 It cheapened a novel that could not afford it。 There were still bright spots, as some of the writing is good, and there are many decent one liners。 “Hope is a currency that never runs out。” “We suffer because we are the grass on which giants tread。”“The dreams of the great are built on the bones of the week。”“A teacher can only lead a student down a path he has already chosen,” 。。。more

I cannot put this book down — I have not had this kind of thrill in reading for a novel for a while。 I admire Ken Liu in adding the sophistication of engineering, philosophy, politics, military tactics, and more into this second book。 As an Asian person, I found the storytelling infused with Eastern culture empowering to read。 Cannot wait for the third book。

Just as exciting and grand in scope as the first book, but with the same issues and more。 Namely, the story is overwritten (too many inconsequential flash backs - my biggest pet peeve), characters' actions are driven by the needs of the plot rather than being actually believable actions in and of themselves, and the addition of the gods irks me。 I'm not sure if I'll read the last book when it comes out; I heard that Ken Liu wrote so many pages that the last book will need to be split into two。。 Just as exciting and grand in scope as the first book, but with the same issues and more。 Namely, the story is overwritten (too many inconsequential flash backs - my biggest pet peeve), characters' actions are driven by the needs of the plot rather than being actually believable actions in and of themselves, and the addition of the gods irks me。 I'm not sure if I'll read the last book when it comes out; I heard that Ken Liu wrote so many pages that the last book will need to be split into two。。 I don't think the story is special enough to inspire me to continue with 1600+ pages。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book but would not read another by Ken Lui。 The book brings together ideas from Game of Thrones, The Emperor series about the wars between the Chinese and the Mongols, and others。 There is a lot of philosophy and discussion about the 4 philosophical ideals followed by the people of Dara – or at least the scholars of Dara。 Overall I think it is an interesting book but the thought of having to digest more philosophy in 800+ pages is just too much for me。
